There are quite a number of challenges that I know do exist which range from: making Gayaza High School stay at the top of academic echelons in Uganda, to the rising costs of commodities and the constant threat of arsonists, to mention but a few! The only asset I have despite the challenges is that I enjoy my work immensely! I always look for ward to each new day! My day starts at 5.00 p.m. and I walk to all dormitories, enter each and every room to ensure that those who can go to do, ‘the early bird’ can do so and also to ensure that the rhythm and ethos of the school is picked by every student at the beginning each day.
The school administration, the B.O.G and P.T.A work together to ensure that the school population is kept at acceptable levels. The facilities at Gayaza were put up to cater for 600 girls. To – date the school population is 1,025! I would like to assure the alumnae that it won’t increase because the 5th stream which had been started in 2005 was phased out at the end of 2008.
The foundation upon which the school was founded, the Christian Foundation is still upheld. One of the 6 core values of the school is Godliness- To live a life according to Christian values. Amazingly, there also challenges at this level because currently in Uganda, there are as many churches as there are people in Uganda! Each church comes along with its own philosophy and doctrine. Such churches always target the youth and would want to lure them into their church on grounds of promising them ‘heaven’ on earth!
I do take this opportunity to extend my appreciation, give a vote of thanks and heartily appreciate the following:
Our former teachers from the United Kingdom, I am constantly in touch with Ms. Sheelagh Warren and Ann Cutler. Their advice, and encouragement to me is invaluable! Each year they raise fees to support those girls who are financially strained in with fees.
The Gayaza Alumnae Network (GAN) who pay full school fees for a student from Senior 5 to 6 and then pick on another one.
The GOGA University Chapter. The launch for this chapter was this year in May and they have done tremendous work. They too have paid fees for one of the candidates who had an outstanding school fees bill. Each term, they do an activity at school.
The current girls in the school- they contribute to the Benevolent Fund which was started by the PTA to support girls who perform well academically but have no fees!
The Palle Moeller Foundation which gives us money every term.
Last but not least FAWE- Uganda Chapter which pays fees and supports quite a big number of girls and has been doing so for the last 10 years.
I pledge to keep and preserve the brand name: Gayaza High School . I implore all of you who visit our website to accord the school all the possible support.
NEVER GIVE UP!
